CDO employees make 10,000 face shields for frontliners

When CDO President Jerome D. Ong told his people, “Walang maiiwan,” he was true to his word.

Within days, the company mobilized to safeguard the welfare of its people, aiming to become fully operational at the earliest possible time so that CDO products will remain on store shelves in spite of the COVID-19 crisis.

With their employees’ health as top priority, CDO made sure that those who are immuno-compromised stay safe at home. But the company also sought to help its vulnerable employees remain productive and continue to earn, even while at home.  Thus was born the Face Shields Program. 61 employees signed up for the program, and are now gainfully producing face shields that are donated to frontliners in hospitals.

Roselyn, a 48-year-old team leader in CDO, is one of the program’s volunteers. Despite her diabetes which required that she stay home to protect herself from COVID-19, she is grateful to do her part to support the frontliners. With the materials CDO provides which she turns into face shields, Roselyn is able to make 90 shields in one day. She said, “Laking tuwa namin na may naiaambag kami kahit sa maliit na paraan sa mga mabibigyan na frontliners, habang patuloy ang pakikipaglaban sa COVID. Malaking part ito ng pagtanggap namin sa project na ito.”

Ehdz, who has been working in CDO for 8 years, is grateful for the opportunity to earn his wages while helping the frontliners at the same time. “Mas maganda po gumawa nang walang iniisip na halaga, at yung pagod namin sa paggawa ng face shields ay para sa ikabubuti nila. Masaya kami at gumawa ang CDO ng paraan kung paano sila makatulong sa amin, bilang no work no pay kami.”

In just a few days, the company was able to donate 4,500 face shields to 22 hospitals, and 5,500 more are targeted for the next wave.

Meanwhile, the rest of the employees of CDO work non-stop to make sure its well-loved products continue to be available in stores for Filipino families. Foreseeing the difficulty in transportation due to ECQ, the company deployed free shuttle service vans in Valenzuela and Batangas to bring workers from their homes to the plants every day. Nearby sleeping quarters were also rented and set up in the plants for the plant workers. Food as well as protective gear, face shields, and vitamins were provided to all employees – because CDO recognizes that people are their most valuable asset.

Roselyn proudly said, “Kahit may crisis, at lalo na dahil may krisis, kayang-kaya nating magtulungan para sa kapakanan ng lahat.” This Can-DO attitude combined with a culture of giving permeates through the family-oriented company that is CDO, and lives in the hearts of its employees.
